Mobile first is awkward for developers at first, but it’s the right way to approach responsive website design. You end up serving less resources to mobile devices and you will write less CSS code than designing from the desktop down. In my experience, you can build on your mobile styles for tablets and desktops with small adjustments under the appropriate media queries. The first responsive sites I built were from the desktop down, and I ended up wasting a lot of time moving my CSS between media queries, or writing more CSS than was necessary instead of just being able to make small adjustments as I do now using a mobile first approach.
